Scott,

Great post. I may not have expressed it as clearly as I wanted, but the main point of my post is just what you said. Small business is indeed "trampled" by government, not directly, but by government's ongoing handouts and bias for mid to large size businesses. They don't have to play by the same rules.

Every time the politicians give a big business some kind of preferenttial treatment, handouts, bailouts, loans that a small business can't get, etc. - that action hurts small businesses. The artificial profit created allows the big boys to go after more customers at the expense of the small businesses who have not been given the bailouts, handouts, and preferential legislation.

As a result we pay more in benefits for every employee than big business, more in health care, a much larger percentage of our revenue dealing with IRS regs and all other regs, etc.

Ongoing government handouts, bailouts, support, and preferential treatment to big business is how government tramples on small business. We don't want handouts, we just want the government to stop doing it for the rest of business.
What always surprises me is how often you have to fight with people to get them to accept a simpler, non-technical solution. It's often cheaper and easier, but I have the distinct impression from time to time that some people will keep looking until they find someone who will recommend something shiny with lights on it, even when an easy answer is right in front of them.

    Well said!

We IT folk have the unique opportunity to see good and bad business ideas in action - and a lot of the time, a good solution has nothing to do with IT.

One of the more amusing things that happened to me was a three-man office wanted a group calendar system that was easy to use by everyone from the local Office Depot.

In one hour we had their system ready: We delivered them a white-board calendar with erasable markers.

It really was the best solution to their business needs.

Excellent point. I can only think of a handful of cases where a potential client has asked me for references (although I most frequently find new clients through old ones; I suppose the reference is implicit in those cases). I completely agree that those shopping around for consultants should get references for them first.

I think that there is room for the use of consultants in both small and large businesses.

Key is the selection. I believe whether it is a small consultancy or a large international consultancy, check their references.

Check whether they remained within budget? Did they solve the problem? What was the problem? IS the problem similar to yours? What were the solutions if any and did they work?

Do not abdicate to consultants, simply use them as a tool to expand capacity within the firm. Did they do hat for heir prior clients?
Yes, too much complexity while it sounds good, is not good for the vast majority of small business. See our blog for a discussion of IP Phones as an example of the types of struggles going on in small business communication and phone systems.

Joey, thanks for the detailed rundown of the benefits of choosing OpenDNS. Could hardly have said it better myself!

A few notes:

1. If privacy is a major concern, then OpenDNS is head and shoulders above your other choices. Our privacy policy is clear, consistent, and doesn't claim ownership of your data (as AT&T does, for instance). http://www.opendns.com/privacy
I challenge any other DNS service (ISP or otherwise) to demonstrate that they give you more control over your data. With an account, OpenDNS lets you purge your data or (as you say) not collect it at all. Without an account, we drop the IP address (the identifying piece of information) in 2 business days from all requests. We do not sell, share, trade your data. (Sorry for going on at length here, but this is important.)

2. The TechCrunch article you linked to was 8 days after we launched. It's been nearly 14 months since then. And Michael Arrington, the founder of TechCrunch, went so far as to post that he personally thought OpenDNS was useful, contradicting his site's review (written by another author): http://www.crunchnotes.com/?p=238

Joey, thanks for taking a thorough look, and appreciate your real-world feedback on OpenDNS.

Look forward to continued improvement.

Cheers,
John Roberts
